![]() Since the spring of 2005, Kipp Hill Farm has been the home to a rare breed of sheep, the Navajo-Churro. Brought to the Americas in the mid-1500's, the Navajo-Churro are believed to be the first breed of domesticated sheep to exist in North America. The Churro were imported here from the Iberian Pennisula originally by the Spaniard, Don Juan Onate. The Navajo Indians acquired the sheep via trading and through raids. They preserved the breed, thus the name, Navajo-Churro. This sheep is a hardy breed, able to endure harsh weather conditions and survive on meager supplies of vegetation. Still, this wool breed sheep, known for its long, soft hair wool used by the Navajo in their beautiful blankets, numbers only around 5,000 worldwide. Kipp Hill Farm is now home to, Pebbles, a brown Navajo-Churro ewe. |
